Stormy Kromer

Born out of necessity in 1903, Stormy Kromer began when railroad engineer George “Stormy” Kromer asked his wife, Ida, to sew a cap that would stay put in harsh Midwest winds. Her solution—a wool cap with a pull-down earband—quickly became an icon of American ingenuity and grit, beloved by outdoorspeople, workers, and winter wanderers across the Upper Midwest.
More than 120 years later, that same pioneering spirit continues in Ironwood, Michigan, where Stormy Kromer still cuts and sews its wool caps and apparel with craftsmanship, durability, and timeless style. The brand has grown beyond the original cap to include outerwear, apparel, pet gear, and accessories—all designed to stand up to real-world use while honoring its roots.
Today, Stormy Kromer is proud to be family-owned and woman-led. Under current leadership, the company continues to expand its product lines, invest in local manufacturing jobs, and innovate responsibly—while staying true to the heritage values that shaped the brand: quality, community, and American craftsmanship.
Supporting Stormy Kromer means supporting sustainable U.S. manufacturing, rural jobs in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and a business led by a family carrying forward a century-old legacy. This holiday season, we invite shoppers to choose gifts that are built to last—and made by a company committed to its people, its place, and its story.

Founder(s), CEO and/or President Gina Jacquart Thorsen
As the CEO and co-owner of Stormy Kromer, I have the privilege of carrying forward a legacy that started long before I was born. My family’s sewing factory took stewardship of this iconic brand nearly 25 years ago, breathing new life into a century-old product while keeping its roots firmly planted in the Upper Midwest. I grew up watching the work happening on our factory floor—people I’ve known my whole life doing the hard work of cutting and sewing soft goods in the US.

Leading Stormy Kromer today is both a continuation of that legacy and an evolution of it. We’ve expanded into new product lines, forged collaborations with partners across the region, and introduced collections that honor the past while speaking to a new generation of outdoor lovers. Yet through every change, what has remained constant is our commitment to craftsmanship, our employees, and our community in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Stormy Kromer is proudly family-owned and rooted in values shaped by generations: authenticity, hard work, and making things that last. When you choose our products, you’re supporting not just a heritage brand—you’re supporting the people, place, and purpose behind it.
