Do Good Swimwear

Do Good Swimwear was born from the idea that there are creative ways to recycle, regenerate, and repurpose ocean waste/ plastics into beautiful pieces for active, ocean loving humans everywhere. The vision is to see more people being thoughtful with how they shop, and helping future generations of women by purchasing with intent and purpose. All of the swimwear is made out of regenerated ocean waste, and a portion of all profits donates to ocean conservation efforts, tree planting and empowering women in need by working with nonprofits that help girls and women stay in school, get vocational training, or even help microfinance their own small businesses so that they can thrive.

Do Good is also about giving other women a voice and place in media. We use models of different shapes, sizes, and ethnicities to show people, especially young women, that you don't have to look a certain way to be able to rock a swimsuit at the beach or be featured in a magazine. Growing up in a very diverse neighborhood, we rarely saw girls in commercials or ads that looked like us so with this brand, we want to show young girls that you are beautiful no matter what you look like and our differences are things to be celebrated. There is no norm. We are a small business but we have a big message and we'd love to share it through our sustainable swimwear line.

I am a surfer, a mental health nurse practitioner, and a small business owner of a sustainable swimwear brand called Do Good Swimwear. I grew up in a household where we always re-examined ways to reuse things and give things a second life (and sometimes third, fourth, fifth, etc. if possible!). As a surfer, I always found it disheartening to see so much trash everywhere on the beach and in the ocean and I wanted to find a way to help clean up the ocean and find a way to repurpose the waste that I'd see into something beautiful. I did some research into what happens to recycled plastics and found that there were actually places that collect ocean waste such as plastic bottles and nylon fishing nets, and regenerated them into gorgeous fabric that could be used for activewear. I've always loved to draw and design things, and found that sometimes it was hard to find a swimsuit that really stays on and looks cute in the ocean. So I decided to create a brand that would use this regenerated material to make swimsuits that are beautiful, flattering, and stay on for active people. I also wanted to help diversify media and the image of what a "typical surfer girl" looks like, so I always feature people that you would encounter in real life, like my surf sisters and other friends we've met along this journey. I also wanted the brand to do some more good on top of that, and donate a portion of the profits to nonprofits that help with ocean conservation and carbon offsetting by planting trees/ sustainable plants that can also be sources of food for farmers and their families. As a minority female business owner and mental health nurse practitioner, I also wanted to help other women that may not have the same resources to thrive as well, so a portion of the profits also go towards empowering other women by supporting them going to school, getting trauma therapy, or starting their own business help. And that is how Do Good Swimwear was born!
