Fancywork is a community gathering space for fiber lovers to come together to learn and be inspired by one another. Our inclusive, respectful and insightful conversations begin with craft but often knit their way outside the box towards what makes us tick – our closely held beliefs, our backgrounds, our jobs, families and so much more. We believe in the power of craft to join people together through the common threads of humanity.
Founder Story Sometimes dreams really do come true. Just like fiber artists of all kinds, My mother taught me to knit at a young age. And while I took time off from fiber arts during my college years and again when I was starting a family, my love of working with wool never left me. Along the way, my mom and I would talk about how wonderful it would be to own a yarn shop – the idea being that one could sit in their shop all day, playing with yarn and talking with like-minded crafters. But the reality is that yarn shops are hard work, rarely profitable, and business ownership leaves little time for actual knitting on the job. So I did not pursue that dream for many years. Instead I worked hard to build a career in graphic design and brand strategy. But over time I missed my knitting. And I began to see how important the act of crafting is to maintaining a sense of balance in life. Picking up my knitting needles and moving yarn through my hands became a way for me to re-center myself each day while learning new skills and making things that I was really proud of. My hope is that others will feel a similar sense of wellness, peace, confidence and accomplishment through making as well.
