Sierra Sown, founded by Kali McKeown in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, is a world of nature- inspired art, apparel, and lifestyle goods crafted with the sun to bring the beauty and magic of the Sierra Nevada and the wild places we play into everyday life. Inspired by her years guiding rivers and roaming amongst mountains, Kali combines sustainably foraged pressed flowers and topographic maps with the cyanotype process to capture the beauty and magic of wild places. Each piece is designed to bring about peace, contemplation, and connection—reminding us of our time spent in the mountains and inspiring care for the landscapes we love.
Sierra Sown is the creation of Kali McKeown, an artist and adventurer whose work is deeply rooted in the wild landscapes that shaped her.
Raised in the mountains of Santa Cruz, California, Kali grew up surrounded by towering redwoods and the pull of the nearby ocean. After studying film in college, she traded the classroom for the current, spending over a decade as a river guide in the mountains of the Sierra Nevada and Alaska with a couple year break chasing ocean waves in Hawaii.
The spark for Sierra Sown began one quiet evening in her tent, as Kali watched the shadows of a tree dance across the canvas walls. That moment, fleeting, natural, and full of quiet magic, stirred something in her and made her want to capture the moment in some creative way. That thought sparked a return to a childhood obsession, cyanotype printing, and she dove in deep. It combined everything that called to her: light, nature, and the deep blue tones that echoed the rivers she once guided and the ocean she grew up on.
Through Sierra Sown, Kali captures the essence of the Sierra — moments of wonder, stillness, and connection — and transforms them into wearable and functional art.
